This black-eyed Susan is the official Maryland State Flower and is native to most of the contiguous United States. Considered a short-lived perennial, it happily self-sows to ensure its presence year after year, making it perfect for the meadow-like native, butterfly, or pollinator garden. In early to mid-summer, flowers with golden-yellow ray petals and a dark brown cone appear on 2-4' tall upright foliage. Flowers are 2-3" across and will continue into late summer, with deadheading. End of season cones can be left to feed birds and for seed dispersal. Tolerant of drought and clay or sandy soils. Plant 18" apart.
