A signal of spring’s arrival is witnessed at woods’ edge and understory when the small yellow flowers of spicy scented spicebush appear in March, before leaves have emerged on its branches. Lindera benzoin has an upright habit and grows to 6-10’ tall. Late summer brings red drupes which ripen as the leaves turn yellow. Male and female plants are necessary to set fruit. All parts have a spicy scent, including flowers, drupes, crushed leaves, and twigs. Prefers moist locations.
