A ground cover unlike any other, with heart-shaped leaves that are tinged red-bronze on the edges, Barrenwort performs as its name implies. It is the best ground cover for dry shade needing a good loamy soil. The semi-evergreen foliage is 9" tall and develops clusters of red starry flowers with white spurs in May close to the leaves. Lovely planted among trees in woodland setting. Cut back any untidy foliage in late winter. Try it with Pulmonaria, Carex, and blue-leaved Hostas such as 'Blue Cadet'.
