A fluttering display of unique reddish-purple inflorescences are held horizontally to one side of the 12-20" tall blades in summer and into fall. Fine-textured bluish-gray foliage becomes copper to reddish-orange in fall. Native to the dry, rocky soils of the central and western U.S., it will thrive in well-drained soil and full sun. This relatively short native grass will work well with more compact native Aster, Asclepias tuberosa, and Coreopsis verticillata. Drought resistant. Plant 18" apart.
