This dense, semi-evergreen ground cover has deeply cut lobed leaves and petite yellow flowers in late spring. Barren strawberry is tolerant of many soil types, except where it is too dry, and prefers some shade in hot afternoon sun. The foliage grows 3-6" tall and spreads up to 18". Although very similar to the native Appalachian barren strawberry (Waldsteinia fragaroides), it differs in flower structure (petals are oval-shaped and overlapping as opposed to the narrow-shaped petals of the native), growth habit (foliage clumps more than the native, which tends to stretch out), and the leaflets are more deeply divided on the Eurasian species.
