An American native, this under-used perennial has reddish-purple leaves and stems, is evergreen, and produces nodding, tubular white flower bells with just a hint of pink on open thin spikes in June. The flowers reach a height of 2–3'. An excellent cut flower easily grown if given adequate water in the summer to prolong bloom time, it can also handle quite a bit of dry sun. Try it in combination with blue-gray or silver-foliaged plants or grasses.
