Perovskia atriplicifolia

Russian Sage

Perovskia is arguably one of the best garden plants of all time. The clouds of blue-violet spikes grow to 4' on gray-white aromatic stems. Loves heat, good drainage, and blooms from July to September. Its texture serves as a complement to lower perennials and ground covers such as Artemisia, Coreopsis, Hypericum, Liriope, and Sedum. Just as easily, it looks great with taller plants such as the Daylilies, Maiden Grass, and Summer Phlox 'David' and 'Shortwood', to name a few.

If someone new to gardening asks me for a plant that is almost indestructible, and flowers well in late summer and fall, I just utter two words – Russian sage. Politics notwithstanding, plants are tough and produce hundreds of lavender blue flowers over gray-green foliage. Add to that the remarkable fragrance of the leaves, and you have a winner.
